Film Shoots on the Road: Portable Sanitation for Remote Locations

Location shoots rarely happen near a bathroom. Whether you're filming a desert chase scene, a forest drama, or a highway commercial 40 miles from the nearest town, sanitation is one of the first logistics problems a production has to solve — and one of the easiest to get wrong.

Why Remote Shoots Need a Sanitation Plan

Cast and crew can spend 10–14 hours on location. Without restrooms on site, productions lose time to bathroom runs, risk OSHA and union compliance issues, and create unnecessary friction on set. For countrywide productions moving from state to state, sanitation needs to be arranged fresh at every stop — which means working with a rental provider who can deliver reliably no matter how remote the location.

What to Rent, and Why

• Standard units — sufficient for smaller crews or short shoots (half-day to one day).

• Deluxe/flushable units — recommended for multi-day shoots or when talent and department heads need a higher-comfort option.

• Hand-wash stations — essential for craft services areas and anywhere food is handled on set.

• ADA-accessible units — required if any cast, crew, or extras need accessible facilities; also worth having on hand for larger productions regardless.

• Trailer-mounted restrooms — best for longer shoots (a week or more) or when production wants a more comfortable, private option for key talent.

A good rule of thumb: one unit per 10–15 people for a full shoot day, more if craft services and video village are spread across a large area.

Logistics for Remote and Multi-State Productions

1. Book early

2. Confirm placement access

3. Plan for servicing

4. Check permitting

5. Coordinate teardown

Why Work With a Countrywide Rental Provider

Productions that move between locations and states benefit from a single rental partner who can coordinate delivery nationwide, rather than sourcing a new vendor at every stop. This means consistent unit quality, one point of contact for scheduling across the shoot, and fewer surprises when a location changes last minute.
